NORTHWEST MEXICO

BAJA CALIFORNIA, SONORA, AND CHIHUAHUA

Prehistorically excavated tailings at Valle del Azufre, Baja California Sur (Sea of Cortez in background)

While Northwest Mexico is beginning to receive the archaeological attention it surely deserves, the understanding of lithic raw material sources still relies on early 20th-Century speculation (c.f. Fralick et al. 1998; Shackley in Hard and Roney 1999; Vierra 1999). Baja California is the exception to the rule here where the obsidian sources are well known and have been reported for decades (Banks 1971; Bouey 1984; de la Luz Gutiérrez, and Hyland 1995; Douglas 1981; Miranda et al. 1993; Shackley 1994; Shackley et al. 1996).
